Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a sudden rise in cloudburst-related incidents, triggering flash floods, landslides and widespread damage across several hilly areas. According to residents, around 14 cloudburst incidents have been reported across the region.
On Wednesday, a cloudburst occurred near a panchayat in the Thanamandi sub-division of Rajouri district, resulting in the deaths of four people. The extreme weather event also caused significant damage to roads, homes, vehicles, agricultural land and other public infrastructure.
Flash Floods and Landslides Disrupt Life
The cloudbursts in the mountainous areas triggered sudden flash floods and landslides, severely disrupting normal life. Residents reported that several streams and water channels experienced a sudden, powerful surge, causing extensive destruction in surrounding areas.
The heavy flow of water swept away vehicles, damaged houses, and affected roads and other essential infrastructure. Authorities and local communities are assessing the extent of the damage as concerns remain over further rainfall and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Vehicles and Houses Swept Away
The impact of the cloudburst was particularly severe in several parts of Rajouri district. The main bus stand was reportedly washed away, while the strong floodwaters swept away multiple vehicles.
Several residential houses were either completely washed away or severely damaged. Agricultural fields and farmland were also affected, adding to the losses suffered by residents.
The Rajdhani Panchayat area of Rajouri witnessed some of the worst destruction. Along with homes and farmland, landslides blocked roads and disrupted connectivity in the hilly region.
A house belonging to a family of six was completely washed away. After losing their home and belongings, the family was forced to take shelter in a government school.
What Did the Victims Say?
Speaking to news agency ANI, resident Abdul Ghani described the frightening experience. He said the flash flood occurred after a cloudburst between approximately 3:00 am and 3:45 am on August 19.
According to Abdul, the situation deteriorated rapidly, leaving residents with little time to respond. He said that while his family was inside the house, they suddenly heard the roar of the river and the sound of rocks crashing down the hillside.
The family managed to escape the house and is now taking shelter in a government school.
“My house was completely washed away,” Abdul said while describing the devastation caused by the sudden flood.
Residents Concerned Over Further Weather Events
Local residents said they had never witnessed such a frightening flash flood in the area. They expressed concern over the continuing risk of heavy rainfall, sudden flooding and landslides in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
The disaster on August 19 caused extensive damage in Rajouri, affecting public infrastructure, roads, vehicles, residential properties and agricultural land.
The destruction in the Rajdhani area has once again highlighted the vulnerability of mountainous regions to cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides during periods of extreme weather. With several areas already affected, residents remain concerned about the possibility of further rainfall and related hazards.
