Brishti Mukherjee, the 28-year-old niece of Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, died at her home in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Tuesday. Police said initial findings suggest it may be a case of suicide, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after further investigation.
Body Sent for Post-Mortem
According to police, Brishti’s body was found in a room on the second floor of her family’s house in Kusumba village, located in the Rampurhat area, on Tuesday afternoon.
After receiving information about the incident, police reached the spot and sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
A senior police officer said the investigation is underway and that the circumstances surrounding her death will become clearer after the post-mortem report and other procedural inquiries. Officers are also recording statements from family members.
Family Says She Was Undergoing Treatment for Depression
Family members said Brishti had been going through divorce proceedings and had been receiving treatment for depression for the past few years.
Police are now investigating the immediate circumstances leading up to her death. Brishti’s father, Nihar Mukherjee, is the son of Mamata Banerjee’s maternal uncle and is a local TMC leader. The investigation is continuing.
