The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Deputy Controller of Accounts and Internal Financial Adviser posted with the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in an alleged Rs 10 lakh bribery case.
According to the CBI, the accused officer, identified as Sandeep, allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh from a complainant for clearing a pending file related to the renewal of a private company’s contract. Following negotiations, the alleged bribe amount was reduced to Rs 10 lakh.
CBI Registers Bribery Case Against I&B Ministry Officer
The CBI registered a case on August 18 based on a complaint alleging that Sandeep had demanded money to speed up the clearance of the pending contract renewal file.
The accused is an Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer from the 2020 batch and was serving as Deputy Controller of Accounts and Internal Financial Adviser in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.
According to the agency, Sandeep was asking for a bribe for clearing the renewal file of a private company’s contract that was pending before him.
Officer Allegedly Demanded Rs 15 Lakh Bribe
The CBI said the officer initially allegedly demanded Rs 15 lakh from the complainant to clear the file swiftly.
After negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept Rs 10 lakh as the bribe.
The agency subsequently conducted an initial enquiry and gathered evidence related to the complaint before laying a trap.
CBI Catches Officer While Accepting Rs 10 Lakh
The CBI laid a trap on Tuesday and allegedly caught Sandeep while he was accepting the bribe amount through his wife.
The arrest was made after the agency confirmed the alleged transaction as part of its trap operation.
The development comes as the CBI continues its action against alleged corruption and bribery involving public officials.
CBI Searches Office and Seizes Files
Following the arrest, CBI officials searched the accused officer’s office.
During the search, the agency seized several files and documents, which are expected to form part of the ongoing investigation.
The CBI is continuing its investigation into the alleged bribery case and the circumstances surrounding the pending contract renewal file.
