The flood situation in Hajipur, Bihar, has deteriorated as rising water levels in the Ganga and Gandak rivers have inundated several low-lying parts of the city. Floodwater has entered residential areas and agricultural land, while waterlogged roads are making it difficult for residents to move around.
Eight wards under the Hajipur Municipal Council have reported flooding. Wards 16, 17 and 43 are among the worst affected, while parts of Wards 35, 37, 38, 44 and 45 have also been hit.
Residents Take Shelter Along Highway
Hajipur Municipal Council Chairperson Dr Sangeeta Kumari visited the affected areas on Thursday to assess the situation and meet residents. She spoke to flood-affected families about their immediate needs and instructed municipal officials to step up relief measures.
In Ward 43, several residents have moved to the roadside along the highway after floodwater entered their neighbourhoods. Arrangements are being made to provide them with food, tents, temporary shelters and fodder for livestock.
The municipal administration is also coordinating with the local Circle Officer to manage relief efforts. Officials said food distribution would begin in the evening, while a community kitchen will also be operated for affected residents.
More Boats Being Arranged for Flood Relief
Authorities are preparing the Ramchaura Temple premises as another possible shelter for people displaced by the flooding. Basic facilities are being arranged so that residents can move to a safer location if water levels rise further.
Additional boats are also being arranged to assist people in flooded areas and support emergency movement.
The municipal chairperson urged residents to remain calm but take necessary precautions. People have been advised not to enter floodwater, while children should be kept away from inundated areas. Residents have also been asked to move themselves, their families and livestock to safe and dry locations.
Municipal Junior Engineer Krishna Prasad, along with other municipal personnel, was present during the inspection.
