Nepal Earthquake: Two moderate earthquakes struck northwestern Nepal within a span of nearly three hours early Wednesday, triggering panic among residents. No casualties or structural damage have been reported so far.
According to the National Seismological Research Centre, the first earthquake was recorded at 1:51 am local time. It measured 4.5 on the Richter scale, with the epicentre located around the Kalai area of Mugu district.
A second earthquake struck at 4:28 am, registering a magnitude of 4.2. The epicentre of the second tremor was also reported to be in the vicinity of Mugu district.
The tremors were felt in neighbouring Dolpa and Jumla districts, prompting concern among residents in the region.
Authorities Monitoring for Aftershocks
Nepal lies in a seismically active region and experiences earthquakes regularly. Following Wednesday’s tremors, authorities are monitoring the affected areas for possible aftershocks and signs of structural damage.
Officials have so far reported no loss of life or property damage from the two earthquakes. Residents, however, remain alert following the repeated tremors.
Nepal Already Reeling From Flood Disaster
The earthquakes come as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of a devastating flash flood that struck on August 26.
According to officials, the death toll from the disaster had risen to 1,399 by Tuesday. The sudden flooding, triggered by the movement of snow and rocks near the Nepal-Tibet border, caused extensive destruction across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.
Authorities continue to assess the situation in affected areas while keeping a close watch on further natural hazards.
