India has strongly rejected remarks by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Jammu and Kashmir and New Delhi’s counter-terrorism operations, accusing the grouping of failing to distinguish between the victims and perpetrators of terrorism.
India’s response was delivered by BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb during the United Nations General Assembly’s Sixth Committee session on “Measures to Eliminate International Terrorism.”
Responding to an OIC statement delivered by Saudi Arabia, Deb defended India’s actions against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
He said India has the right to protect its citizens from cross-border terrorism originating from Pakistan and warned that those involved in terrorism would face consequences.
India Calls for Zero Tolerance on Terrorism
Deb said terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, remains one of the major threats to international peace and security. He stressed that attacks targeting civilians cannot be justified and argued that the international community should not differentiate between “good” and “bad” terrorism.
India also renewed its call for the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT), a proposal that New Delhi first introduced in 1996.
The convention aims to strengthen the international legal framework for dealing with terrorism and holding perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors accountable. India has repeatedly pushed for progress on the convention at the United Nations.
Pahalgam Attack Cited at UN
India also referred to the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed, while arguing for stronger international action against those who support or finance terrorist organisations.
Deb said countries must work together to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt terror financing and prevent terrorists from receiving safe havens.
India also highlighted the growing use of emerging technologies by terrorist organisations for recruitment, radicalisation, propaganda, operational planning and financing.
The latest exchange at the UN comes amid continuing diplomatic tensions between India, Pakistan and the OIC over Jammu and Kashmir and cross-border terrorism.
