Russia-Ukraine War: At least 12 people have been killed and 17 others injured, including two children, in overnight Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Ukrainian officials.
In Kyiv, six of the eight reported casualties were railway workers employed by state-owned Ukrzaliznytsia after a depot was hit. Four people were also killed in the town of Boryspil.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, with fires breaking out in three districts of the capital. Emergency teams were deployed to deal with the fires and assess the damage.
Russia Says Military Facilities Were Targeted
Russia’s Defence Ministry said it carried out a “massive strike using high-precision weapons”, claiming that military-industrial and fuel-energy facilities in Kyiv and the surrounding region were the targets.
Ukrainian officials, however, reported damage to civilian areas and casualties among railway workers.
Latest Attack Follows Deadly Depot Strike
The overnight strikes came just days after another deadly incident in the Kyiv region. A weapons depot was reportedly hit on Friday, triggering explosions involving shells, mines and drones and leaving 38 people dead, according to local reports.
The latest attacks add to the continuing toll of Russia’s war against Ukraine, which began with Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
With missile and drone strikes continuing across Ukraine, Kyiv and surrounding areas remain frequent targets of Russian attacks.
