Internet services around Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Punjab’s Phagwara have been temporarily suspended as authorities step up security following violent protests on the campus and surrounding areas.
A heavy police presence has been deployed outside the university amid concerns that fresh disturbances could break out. The security measures come after Sunday’s clashes, which reportedly involved vandalism, arson, stone-pelting and disruption on the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway.
Police on Alert After Violent Protests
According to the latest reports, authorities have increased security around the campus as a precaution. Police are concerned that individuals involved in the earlier violence could attempt to create further disruption.
Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav also visited LPU and spoke with students. He said the situation was under control and assured students that their safety would remain a priority.
Authorities have said action will be taken against those found responsible for the violence.
Protests Followed Viral Claims
The unrest began after claims and rumours circulated online concerning an alleged sexual assault involving a student. Police officials have said that the allegation circulating on social media was not supported by evidence found during the initial checks.
Police examined CCTV footage and spoke with students during the investigation. An SIT has also been formed to investigate the matter further.
The situation subsequently escalated, with protesters blocking the highway and clashes breaking out between protesters and police. Several vehicles were reportedly damaged or set on fire during the violence.
LPU Suspends Classes for 10 Days
Amid the continuing tension, LPU has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28. Mid-term examinations have also been postponed until further notice.
Students who want to return home have been advised to do so with the consent of their parents or guardians. Those remaining on campus have been advised to stay inside their hostels or accommodation and avoid unnecessary movement.
Authorities Focus on Restoring Calm
With additional police forces deployed and internet services temporarily suspended around the university, authorities are focusing on preventing another escalation.
Officials have urged students to avoid rumours and rely on verified information while the investigation continues.
The situation remains under close security monitoring as authorities investigate the events that triggered the protests and subsequent violence.
