An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police was shot dead while on night patrol in Amritsar, triggering a police investigation into the killing. The incident took place late Thursday night near Dana Mandi, where the officer was reportedly patrolling on a motorcycle.
The deceased officer has been identified as ASI Harjeet Singh, who was posted at Gate Hakima police station.
According to the information available, ASI Harjeet Singh was on patrol at around 2:30 am when unidentified assailants opened fire at him. The officer suffered serious bullet injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Amritsar for treatment.
Despite efforts to save him, Harjeet Singh succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Senior Police Officers Reach Spot
Following the shooting, senior police officials and a team from the concerned police station reached the scene and began investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Police teams have launched a search operation in the surrounding area to trace the attackers. Investigators are also examining CCTV footage from cameras installed near the crime scene in an effort to identify the suspects and establish their movements before and after the shooting.
Evidence from the scene is also being collected as part of the investigation.
₹2 Crore Financial Assistance for Family
Following the killing, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹1 crore for the family of the deceased ASI.
In addition, HDFC Bank will reportedly provide another ₹1 crore in insurance benefits, taking the total financial assistance announced for the family to ₹2 crore.
Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav said the slain officer would be given a farewell with full police honours.
Manish Tewari Expresses Grief
Congress MP Manish Tewari expressed grief over the killing and raised concerns about the law-and-order situation in Punjab.
Tewari described the incident as deeply unfortunate and said the killing of a police officer in such circumstances raises serious questions about law and order in the state. He also pointed to Punjab’s status as a border state and called for stronger efforts by both the Centre and the state government to strengthen security and policing.
The investigation into the killing is underway, while police teams continue efforts to identify and apprehend the attackers.
