The decision was taken after reviewing road accident cases, traffic congestion and the design and safety conditions of the city’s flyovers.

The restrictions will apply to the BGS flyover, Peenya elevated corridor, Electronic City elevated corridor, Double-Decker flyover and International Airport flyover.

Bengaluru Flyover Vehicle Restrictions From 4 September 2026

According to the Bengaluru traffic police, the restrictions are aimed at improving safety and managing traffic more effectively on busy elevated roads.

Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy said several factors were considered before introducing the restrictions.

These include:

  • Road safety
  • Flyover design and width
  • Reducing the severity of accidents
  • Preventing congestion caused by vehicle breakdowns
  • Managing traffic at flyover entry and exit points
  • Emergency traffic management
  • Safety of pedestrians and two-wheeler riders
  • Overall road safety

BGS Flyover: Goods Vehicle Restrictions

The BGS flyover will see restrictions on goods vehicles.

Under the new rules:

  • Heavy goods vehicles will be completely prohibited from using the flyover.
  • Other light goods vehicles will not be allowed during peak hours.
  • Restrictions for light goods vehicles will apply from 7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm every day.

The move is expected to reduce congestion and minimise the impact of vehicle breakdowns and accidents on the flyover.

Peenya Elevated Corridor Restrictions

The Peenya elevated corridor will also have significant restrictions on commercial vehicles.

According to the traffic police:

  • Passenger auto-rickshaws will be completely prohibited.
  • Goods auto-rickshaws will also be prohibited.
  • Heavy goods vehicles will not be allowed during specified hours.
  • Medium goods vehicles will face the same time-based restrictions.
  • The restricted hours will be 7 am to 11 am and 4 pm to 10 pm.

Commuters using the Peenya corridor may therefore need to plan alternative routes during these hours.

International Airport Flyover Vehicle Restrictions

The International Airport flyover, between Sanjeevnagar Cross and Vidyashilp Junction, will also see restrictions.

The new rules include:

  • Two-wheelers will not be allowed on the flyover.
  • Autorickshaws will be prohibited.
  • All categories of goods vehicles will face restrictions.
  • Goods vehicle restrictions will apply from 6 am to 10 pm.

The move is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety on the important airport-side route.

Double-Decker Flyover Restrictions

The Double-Decker flyover, which connects Silk Board and Ragigudda, will also have restrictions on heavy vehicles.

The Bengaluru traffic police have announced that:

  • Heavy goods vehicles will be completely prohibited from using the flyover.

The restriction is expected to help improve traffic management and reduce the risk of congestion caused by heavy vehicles.

Electronic City Elevated Corridor Restrictions

The Electronic City elevated corridor will have some of the strictest restrictions among the five routes.

Goods vehicles will be prohibited from using the corridor between 6 am and 10 pm.

In addition:

  • Two-wheelers will be completely prohibited.
  • Passenger autorickshaws will be prohibited.
  • Goods autorickshaws will also be prohibited.

Unlike the other flyovers, however, these restrictions will not begin on September 4.

Electronic City Restrictions Start September 11

The traffic police have announced that restrictions on the Electronic City elevated corridor will come into effect from September 11.

Restrictions on the other four flyovers will begin from September 4.

Why Is Bengaluru Police Introducing These Restrictions?

The Bengaluru traffic police said the decision follows an assessment of road accidents and traffic congestion on the city’s flyovers.

Why Is Bengaluru Police Introducing These Restrictions?
Why Is Bengaluru Police Introducing These Restrictions?

Flyovers and elevated corridors can create major traffic problems when accidents or vehicle breakdowns occur because there are fewer opportunities for vehicles to move around the obstruction.

The police have therefore considered not only traffic volume but also factors such as road width, flyover design, emergency management and accident severity.

The safety of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians was also considered while finalising the restrictions.

Bengaluru Traffic Advisory for Commuters

People travelling through these routes should check the restrictions before starting their journey, particularly during peak hours.

Commuters using two-wheelers, autorickshaws and goods vehicles should be especially careful because some categories will be completely prohibited on specific flyovers.

The restrictions could also increase traffic on alternative roads, particularly during the morning and evening peak periods.

Bengaluru Flyover Restrictions: Key Dates

There are two important dates for commuters:

September 4: Restrictions begin on the BGS flyover, Peenya elevated corridor, International Airport flyover and Double-Decker flyover.

September 11: Restrictions begin on the Electronic City elevated corridor.

Commuters using these routes should plan their journeys accordingly and follow traffic police directions.

Conclusion

The Bengaluru traffic police vehicle restrictions on five flyovers are aimed at improving road safety, reducing congestion and making traffic management easier during accidents and emergencies.

The restrictions cover different vehicle categories depending on the design and traffic conditions of each flyover. While most restrictions will start from September 4, the Electronic City elevated corridor will come under the new rules from September 11.

With several major routes affected, commuters and commercial vehicle operators in Bengaluru should familiarise themselves with the new rules and use alternative routes wherever necessary.
