A bizarre election result in Rajasthan has drawn attention after a BJP candidate received just one vote in the municipal ward where he was contesting.
The candidate, Kailashchand, was nominated by the BJP from Ward 13 of Parbatsar Municipality in Didwana-Kuchaman district. However, after the votes were counted, his tally stood at just one.
The result became one of the talking points during the counting of votes for Rajasthan’s urban local body elections.
Candidate Says He Is a Voter in Ward 12
Kailashchand told news agency PTI that he is registered as a voter in Ward 12, rather than the ward from which he contested.
According to him, the BJP decided to field him from neighbouring Ward 13, which may explain the unusually low number of votes he received.
The official result for Ward 13 shows a significant gap between Kailashchand and the other candidates. Congress’s Heena Khanam won the ward with 376 votes, while independent candidate Rashid Khan secured 195 votes to finish second.
Congress Takes 13 of 25 Wards
The Parbatsar Municipality has 25 wards. Congress emerged ahead in the local body, winning 13 wards, while the BJP captured the remaining 12.
Kailashchand’s one-vote tally attracted particular attention as results were being declared across Rajasthan’s 309 urban local bodies. The elections involved contests for more than 10,000 councillor posts.
While municipal elections are decided at the ward level, Kailashchand’s result has highlighted an unusual situation in which a candidate contested from a ward where he was not registered as a voter.
