Tensions rose in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain on Monday as a crowd gathered near the Shahi Mosque ahead of planned demolition of a portion of the structure for a road-widening project.
The situation turned tense after some people allegedly attempted to remove police barricades and clashed with security personnel. Stones were also reportedly thrown at the police, prompting authorities to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Woman Crime Branch Officer Injured
A woman inspector from the Crime Branch, Pushpa Panchal, was reportedly injured during the stone-pelting. Police had placed barricades around the area as administrative teams prepared to carry out the planned action.
Why Is Part of the Mosque Being Removed?
The administration plans to remove around 10 feet of the Shahi Mosque that falls within the proposed road alignment between Kanthal Square and Gopal Temple.
The road-widening work is linked to Ujjain’s Master Plan 2035, which proposes a 15-metre-wide route along this stretch. According to the administration, a portion of the mosque is obstructing the planned alignment.
Earlier on Monday, officials held discussions with members of the local Muslim community. Following the talks, members of the community reportedly reached the site to remove the obstructing portion themselves. However, slogans were raised and opposition to the action was also reported.
The route is significant because it connects key religious and tourist locations, including the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Gopal Temple and the Shipra riverfront. Authorities are carrying out infrastructure work to improve movement during major religious events, including the upcoming Simhastha 2028.
The administration has stepped up security in the area following the clash.
