BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla has raised concerns over the financial pressure faced by India’s middle class, questioning whether taxpayers receive public services that adequately match the taxes they pay. His remarks came shortly before he publicly announced his resignation as a BJP spokesperson.

In a video shared on Instagram as part of his social media initiative, The Manifesto, Poonawalla described the Indian middle class as an “ATM” for the government, arguing that salaried taxpayers contribute through income tax, indirect taxes and tolls but often struggle to access quality public services.

Shehzad Poonawalla Raises Questions Over Taxpayer Burden

Poonawalla questioned whether Indians paying taxes at levels comparable to some European countries receive a similar standard of public services and quality of life.

He argued that taxpayers continue to face problems such as poor infrastructure, inadequate public schools, corruption and a lack of accountability.

According to Poonawalla, the concerns faced by the middle class include:

  • Poor roads and deteriorating infrastructure
  • Inadequate public education facilities
  • Paper leaks and administrative failures
  • Corruption and lack of accountability
  • Concerns over air and water quality
  • Rising dependence on private healthcare and education
  • A growing financial burden from multiple forms of taxation

Middle Class Increasingly Dependent on Private Services

Poonawalla also highlighted the growing dependence of Indian families on private services for essential needs.

He pointed out that many families choose private schools for their children’s education and private hospitals for healthcare, adding to their financial burden even after paying taxes to the government.

Key Concerns Raised by Poonawalla

IssueConcern Raised
Income TaxHigh burden on salaried and middle-class taxpayers
Public InfrastructurePoor roads and deteriorating infrastructure
EducationGreater dependence on private schools
HealthcareFamilies often rely on private hospitals
AccountabilityQuestions over how taxpayer money is used
EnvironmentConcerns over toxic air and water
GovernanceCalls for greater efficiency and transparency

Poonawalla Calls for Lower Taxes and Higher Tax Slabs

Poonawalla called for tax relief for the middle class, particularly salaried employees. He argued that taxpayers should receive a greater break from the current tax burden.

Among his key proposals were:

  • Lower taxes for the middle class
  • Relief for salaried taxpayers
  • Higher income-tax slabs
  • More efficient use of taxpayers’ money
  • Greater accountability in government spending

He also stressed that every rupee collected through personal income tax should be used efficiently and responsibly.

Poonawalla Says Issue Goes Beyond One Government

Poonawalla said the concerns surrounding India’s middle class should not be viewed as an issue limited to a particular government or political party.

Instead, he argued that taxpayers have faced these challenges over a long period and that the issue requires broader attention to public services, taxation and government accountability.

Remarks Came Before BJP Spokesperson Resignation

Poonawalla’s comments came shortly before he announced that he had resigned as a BJP spokesperson, with the resignation pending approval.

He said he had submitted his resignation on July 30 and cited a focus on his financial circumstances among the reasons behind his decision.

His comments on taxation, however, focused more broadly on the financial pressures faced by India’s middle class and the need for better public services in return for the taxes citizens pay.
